Background of the Study
Inter-school sports competitions are recognized as effective avenues for cultivating interpersonal skills among students. In Ilorin West, participation in these events fosters communication, conflict resolution, and teamwork (Adewumi, 2023). Through competitive sports, students are exposed to diverse peer interactions that challenge them to negotiate, collaborate, and build lasting relationships (Chisom, 2024). Such competitions create an environment where students learn to appreciate diverse viewpoints and develop empathy, which is essential for interpersonal growth (Ibrahim, 2025). The structured nature of these events, combined with the pressure to perform, encourages students to refine their social skills and adapt to different team dynamics. However, challenges including limited exposure to well-organized competitions and varying levels of support from school administrations often limit these benefits (Olatunji, 2023). Addressing these challenges is crucial to fully harness the potential of sports competitions as a medium for enhancing interpersonal skills and overall personal development (Musa, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the documented benefits, many schools in Ilorin West struggle to optimize inter-school sports competitions for the development of interpersonal skills. Issues such as inadequate planning, insufficient coaching on teamwork, and sporadic participation diminish the opportunities for effective social learning (Babatunde, 2023). Furthermore, without clear guidelines and structured feedback, the competitive events may inadvertently foster rivalry over collaboration, thereby limiting the intended social benefits (Nwosu, 2024). This study seeks to investigate these challenges and identify key factors that can better support the development of interpersonal skills through well-organized sports competitions (Uche, 2025).
